Walk Wisely
Walk Wisely: Respect, Protect, Enjoy
Respect Everyone
Be considerate of those living, working, and exploring the countryside.
Leave gates and property as you find them.
Park considerately – don’t block gateways or driveways.
Share the space, say hello, and follow local signs. Stick to marked paths unless wider access is allowed.
Protect the Environment
Take your litter home – leave no trace.
Only light fires or BBQs where signs permit.
Keep dogs under control and in sight (and on a lead where requested). Always bag and bin dog waste.
Care for nature – avoid causing damage or disturbance.
Protect yourself
Check the weather: Avoid riverside walks during or after heavy rain – river levels can rise quickly. Websites like the Met Office are great for forecasts. Don’t forget to factor in wind.
Dress for the day: Wear practical footwear for muddy, wet conditions. Bring waterproofs and warm layers – even on sunny days, riverside paths can feel cool. In warmer weather, pack suncream, a hat, and sunglasses for protection.
Know your route: Make sure the walk’s length, difficulty, and terrain suit your abilities.
Stay safe: Share your route and expected finish time with someone reliable. Update them when you’re done. Carry a fully charged phone.
Bring supplies: Walking is thirsty work! Pack water, a snack, and anything else you might need to stay comfortable.
