Information about World Environment Day (WED)
World Environment Day (WED) began in 1974 and aims to raise awareness of the global threats to our environment, whilst encouraging people to take action locally to do something to help their local area. Each year WED is organised around a theme that focuses on a particular concern, this year the theme is connecting people to nature. This is why we are inviting you to join us at Calder Abbey to find out more about invasive non-native species and more particularly to help us blitz the balsam!
Information on Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan balsam (HB) is an invasive non-native plant originally from the western Himalayas. It was brought to the UK by Victorians and has since “escaped” from gardens and is now widespread throughout the countryside.
Why is it a problem?
