Calling on Cumbrian’s to make a pledge!

The Derwent and South West Lakes Catchment Partnerships are asking local people in North and West Cumbria to make a pledge to support their local environment for World Rivers Day.

World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world’s waterways. It highlights the many values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world. And on 28 September, individuals and organisations around the world will be getting involved with activities to celebrate the water environment in their local area.

There have been improvements in our local rivers and lakes in Cumbria over the last two decades, but more needs to be done and everyone has a role to play. That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to show their support, by making a pledge to taking action to reduce their impact on the local water environment.

You can make up your own pledge, or borrow one of our suggestions :

Post a photograph of yourself, showing your pledge onto our WRD Facebook page, Twitter or send it to Karin at West Cumbria Rivers Trust.

Karin Crofts from West Cumbria Rivers Trust, said: “Recognizing World Rivers Day will help spread the message that our local water environment needs our attention. It’s a good way to learn more about your local area and to get family and get friends involved.”

In Cumbria, the Derwent and South West Lakes Catchment Partnerships are also running a range of site visits, talks and activities that will help people to better understand our local water environment.

Events will run from Monday 22nd September throughout the week leading up to World Rivers Day on Sunday 28th September. There will be something for everyone with activities that should answer some of those burning questions like; how do we manage Japanese knotweed? What happens after your flush?! Where does our water come from? How much do fish eating birds really impact on our fish population? How can we improve water infiltration in our fields? What’s all the fuss about river habitats and bank stabilisation?
